Built-ins Around the Bed Frame - First Part

Well, I'm finally back in my son's room!

It's taking me forever to complete this room but, it's almost done.
I'm slow...
And most of the time I'm working on so many different things at the same time that I just can't help it.
It goes very s-l-o-w-l-y.
Add to the equation that many things have to be done and they don't add much to the progress...
Like... giving the ceiling three coats of paint, or
Sanding the walls because the previous design left some marks on them, or
Applying two coats of primer to those walls before applying two coats of paint, or
Installing window trim...
Yeah, those are the things that had to be done and they take lots of time from the only one person that also has lots of other stuff to do.

OK, let's stop the complaining -

The last project tackled in this room was the floor. Plain plywood was transformed into wide planks. The first picture in this post is how the room looks after installing those planks.

I covered the beautiful floor with paper to protect it during the construction of the built-ins.

Leaving the areas for the built-ins open. The bed will be placed in the middle with a bookcase on each side.

Since long ago, I've been on the lookout for a desk, my son requested a desk in his room. Finally, like a month ago, I found this one for free on Craiglist. It was a perfect size, 48", and very sturdy.

Someone gave it a black paint treatment, but the paint was peeling off. So, after removing the trim on the back of the desk (it has to sit flush against the wall)...

I also removed the black paint (another of those jobs that take time). :/

In the meantime, I built another base for the desk.

I loved the base the desk had but if I wanted to leave that one, then, I would have to replicate the same base design on the other bookcase on the other side of the bed, and that was something I didn't want to do.

The base-less desk was brought up to the room after the paint was completely removed...

And once on its new base, it looked OK.

On the other side, I also used a desk. I bought this desk a long time ago for another project that I never got to tackle. The middle drawer of this desk was used for this project right HERE.

The two towers on this desk were a bit higher than the ones on the desk on the left side of the bed. So, they were trimmed at the bottom.

A base out of 2 x 6's was also constructed for this right-hand side built-in.  I'm so glad I waited for the new bed to arrive, I didn't have the bed's dimension and the space I was leaving for it (following the paper cut-outs), was way too small!

The base was covered and the two desk towers were mounted on it. By the way, at first, I thought about building a cabinet on this right-hand side, but I desisted of that idea because I didn't want to build the drawers. The desk solution gives more symmetry to each side of the bed and hey, no drawers for me to build!

For the space in between the two desk towers, I built this little shelf.

At the moment, my plan is to use some baskets on that middle shelf and for the tower on the right, to convert that space into a pull-out hamper, after removing the lower slat, like in the picture below.

The top the desk had is very different from the one on the other side, the edge is different, I don't think I'm going to use it.

So far, this is how it looks.

I'm almost ready to begin building the shelves on top.
But, I'm still deciding some elements, like... Should I use bead-board? If so, vertical or horizontally?
Maybe plain bookcases and only bead-board behind the headboard?
What kind of lighting should I use?
How about color, what kind of paint, knobs, trim...

Well, stay tuned!

  3. You are so clever, Cristina. It takes you a while to do things because they are so involved. You are a smart gal to get that all figured out-plus I know you have all your normal "mom" duties on top of everything else. I can't wait to see that whole room come together. I think it is going to be even better than your inspiration picture. xo Diana

It is looking awesome and you have gotten so much done, it is amazing how many "unexpected" projects appear when you are not planning on them! Great Job Cristina!
