Like many aspiring home renovators, I turned to the inspiring world of DIY blogs, soaking up countless ideas and finally gathering the courage to dive headfirst into a kitchen renovation project. Armed with newfound inspiration, I embarked on a close inspection of our existing kitchen, meticulously listing all the projects I envisioned to bring my dream kitchen to life. This comprehensive "honey-do" list was promptly presented to my husband, with the unspoken (and perhaps slightly stereotypical) expectation that he would conquer all the intricate wooden projects my design demanded.
In my mind's eye, a clear division of labor was established: I would handle the transformative power of paint and the delightful details of decorating, while the "mister" would expertly tackle the building aspects. A classic DIY partnership, right? 😉
Oh, the naiveté! Weeks turned into months, and my carefully crafted to-do list remained largely untouched. It turns out that building wasn't exactly his forte – measurements proved to be a significant hurdle. 😩
But as the saying goes, sometimes setbacks pave the way for unexpected opportunities. In this case, my husband's hesitancy became a powerful catalyst for my own empowerment. Fueled by a growing impatience and a desire to see my kitchen dreams materialize, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I dusted off our old electric drill, gathered the few tools we possessed at the time, and with a mix of trepidation and excitement, I embarked on this kitchen makeover journey solo.
While my previous experience with paint and a smattering of small carpentry projects provided a basic foundation, a full kitchen renovation felt like uncharted territory. Yet, a determined voice inside me declared, "Sure, I can do it!"
Let me be honest – it was a significant undertaking, filled with challenges, learning curves, and moments of sheer exhaustion. However, looking back, I can confidently say that if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't hesitate, especially armed with the invaluable experience I gained.
So, what did this major DIY kitchen makeover ultimately look like? Feast your eyes on the transformation:
I installed the microwave on the other side of the kitchen island.

However, another mini-makeover was done to brighten up the space even more.
The kitchen island was painted a new color, the cabinets were customized further, the range hood was given a new treatment, and the kitchen stools were also given a makeover.

Your kitchen remodel is absolutely gorgeous! I hope you'll answer two questions for me...first, where did you get the gorgeous light fixture over the island? And second, did you tile over the laminate backsplash that was originally on your wall, or did you remove it first--and if so, how??
ReplyDeleteHi Korrie, Thank you for your comment! The light fixture is from CB2, at the top is the Resources Page where you can get more info.
ReplyDeleteNo, I did not tile over the laminate backsplash, that little strip of laminate backsplash was removed by pulling it with a pray bar, making sure not to damage the dry wall! b/cause it was glued pretty dearly by the builder! The marble tile was laid over the drywall after installing the countertops. More info here:http://www.remodelandolacasa.com/2012/01/installing-marble-backsplash.html

ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful makeover. All your changes were so well thought out, and it looks like a million bucks!

ReplyDeleteHi Cristina!! I fell in love with your kitchen cabinet remodel!! My husband and I had "before" cabinets just like yours so when I saw how you transformed them, I knew I wanted to do that as well to ours... and we did!!! I just uploaded a blog post showing our kitchen cabinet update and I linked back to your blog. I would love for you to look at my blog so you can see how our kitchen cabinets turned out....all because of you!! :) We would have liked to add finishing details like a backsplash and so forth but we were moving to DC and time was against us. I love your blog and think you are very talented!! xo Anna www.crazygorgeous.net
ReplyDeleteI'm in awe (and a little jealous!) of your sense of style and eye. This is a fabulous makeover!!! Thanks for sharing all of your details.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jennifer you're so sweet! :)
DeleteHi! I know I am a couple years late to this, but can I ask you what the height of your ceilings are? I have been considering the light fixture but fear it may not work in our kitchen.
ReplyDelete:) Not a problem Laura, Thanks for stopping by! They're 9 feet. I'm still using the same fixture.
DeleteBeautiful- you mentioned keeping the budget low but it certainly looks expensive! would you share approximately how much you spent- at least on the cabinet toppings and fridge build up? Thanks
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the most economical parts. I used MDF / plywood. It would be around $200 max. Not counting the cabinet above the fridge. What usually brings the budget up are the tools, if you don't have them.
