A Brand New Look For The Built-In

shelf styling

It's been almost two years since I brought organization to our family room by building an entire wall of shelves. It was a huge and so very worthy project. This room is now one of the neatest rooms in our house.

When I was painting this unit, I thought of using a deep color, blue or green on the back of those shelves. However, I went the safe route with white paint all around. I was in a rush to finish that project I didn't want to waste time testing colors.

Fast-forward a couple of years and with the proliferation of peel and stick wallpaper, it was about time to give this unit a brand new look the easy way!

I've been in a blue mode for the longest time. Sorry green, you got to wait some more.

For the past year, I was looking at different types of peel and stick wallpaper and in the end, I narrowed down my selections to these four:
|        Grasscloth Blue        |        Blue Diamond Geo        |        Blue Perplexing        |        Pick Up Sticks        |

At the top of my list was the blue grasscloth because of the texture and the fact that it doesn't have any pattern to match up. However, I didn't choose the grasscloth because it appears to me that the blue has a slight green undertone that I don't like.

The Blue Diamond Geo is a paper with a very sharp and beautiful pattern, but I was going for more contrast and the pattern might look too busy.

The Pick Up Sticks by Magnolia was another favorite, but I stayed away from it because of the price.
The winner was the Blue Perplexing paper, the geometric design and tone on tone give it a subtle effect with a good punch of color.

This is not a tutorial. Installing peel and stick wallpaper is as easy as 1-2-3! Cut a piece of wallpaper, peel it off and stick it on the wall or surface you want to cover.

Here's a video of this project with some useful tips:

The materials and tools you will need:
I set a workbench in the middle of the room to measure and cut the paper. All you need to do is measure and cut the pieces of wallpaper and then, peel them off and set them on the back of the shelves.

I started in the center, covering the area around the TV, aligning the pattern, and smoothing out the paper.
In the end, all excess paper was trimmed off with a utility knife and a taping knife.

I love how it changes the look of the entire room!

I bought two rolls of paper and it wasn't enough because I had lots of pattern alignment to do.

I couldn't align the pattern on any of the side shelves. That's one more reason why I love this pattern... It's very forgiving. Although, if you look for those mismatching spots you can easily find them.

Then, the styling made me go and shop my own home. The jean-covered books came in handy here for a little extra tone-on-tone. ;)

I like how the TV blends in better with the new darker background.

The rustic garland is another little project that adds movement to this area.

I had to trim the paper here on this area below the TV. Half of it was done the wrong way, but I quickly learned from my mistake.  That's something that I'm going to show you in the video, easier to explain there.

This might be the early Summer look for these shelves.

Well, my friends, it's not perfect, but the peel and stick paper was easy to install and it gives the room a completely new look that I'm digging. And the best part is that I can take it off whenever I get tired of it. 👍

Have you installed peel and stick paper lately? Where did you install it?
