DIY - Modern Floating Nightstands

An easy-to-build set of modern, floating nightstands.

Choosing the nightstand style for my sister's bedroom had to be easy... Why? Because we didn't have many tools.

If you're looking for a simple set of nightstands that you can build with a circular saw, a nailer, and a drill, then, this is the build for you!

If you're new here, let me tell you that I'm visiting my family in Colombia where I'm also bringing change to one of my sister's bedrooms. You can check the before and plans for her bedroom right HERE. The second part right HERE was all about the TV wall.

This third bedroom makeover post is about the DIY - Floating nightstands.

Even though this is an easy build, it was difficult working there, on the floor and without some basic tools like a square or clamps (I bought them by the end of this build).

We used 3/4" melamine boards for this project, it was a more economical option than buying plywood there, and the fact that it comes already finished made it a win/win situation.

The floating design made this, a very simple build, but it is also a space-efficient build, with no legs to block the view underneath. Perfect for small bedrooms like the one we're updating.

The materials you'll need:
  • 48" x 48" piece of 3/4" Plywood (we used melamine boards)
  • Edge banding
  • 4 - Hinges
  • 2 - Cabinet pulls
  • Wood glue
  • 1-1/2" brad nails
  • Plans right HERE

The tools you might need:

Tape Measure - Drill - Circular Saw -  Brad Nailer - Angle Square - Iron - Xacto knife - Clamps

Cut list for one nightstand:
  • 4 - 3/4" Plywood @ 15-1/2" X 15-1/2"  - both sides, top and bottom
  • 1 - 3/4" Plywood @ 14" X 14" - Center shelf
  • 1 - 3/4" Plywood @ 15-1/2" X 14"  - Back
  • 1 - 3/4" Plywood @ 15-1/2" X 8-1/2"  - Door
  • 2 - 3/4" Plywood @ 13" X 4-1/2"  - Cleats - one long side cut at 45-degrees

Directions:

1. Cut the material following the cut list above.

2. Assemble the box. Use glue and 1-1/2" brad nails driven from top & bottom onto the sides of the table.

3. Install the center shelf. Make sure it's installed and flushed to the front.

4. Install the back of the nightstand. Inset 3/4"

 4. Cover rough edges of plywood/melamine with edge banding. It's usually ironed in place.
For some reason we couldn't iron it in place, it didn't stick. We had to use strong glue.
Then, we trimmed the banding with an X-acto knife and a band trimmer.
5. Install hinges according to the manufacturer's instructions.

We used a drill bit to set the hinges cup hole.
 6. Install the pull.
7. Use the French cleat system to install the nightstands on the wall. I didn't take pictures of this step, but you can check this post right here, where I used the same system to hang another set of similar nightstands.
Here is how they look inside the room. Waiting for the bed to arrive.

Those cables that you see in the picture below, are for the hanging lamps.

An eye screw on the ceiling and the main cord was hidden down the wall inside a canal that was painted the same color as the wall.
Well, here is how the right nightstand looks.
And here is a sneak peek of the left one, holding those beautiful yellow Colombian blooms.

Stay tuned for the final part of the reveal of this small bedroom makeover which is coming at the end of the week.
