Our little guest room was meant to be a patriotic bedroom! Look at it, all dressed in red, white and blue, it simply pops when we come up to get to the bedrooms. Like if it's saying, hey, look at me!
I finished the makeover of this bedroom just a few short weeks ago. The previous dark room is not missed at all. I was very happy with all the décor I used during the reveal. However, I only needed to add blue to give it this patriotic update!
Well, the other element that I wanted to incorporate during this new update was this skim board with the LifeGuard sign to be used as wall art. A small way to also give the room a summery vibe, and it turned out to be an easy DIY project.
I usually have plenty of wood in the garage to come up with art pieces, so for this project, I used 1/4" plywood.
The curvy outline was free-handed and then I used a jig-saw to cut it out.
Then, I traced the words and sign with carbon paper and used a red Sharpie to fill them in.
Finally, a coat of clear poly was applied to protect the paint job and the wood.
Then, the decorative part began. Blue striped and American flag throw pillows were brought in.
This is our guest bedroom, but my kids are now using it as a reading space. The red box might or might not be full of bubble gum. :)
At the end of this post I'll be linking all the projects that were tackled to bring this room to life. The painted subfloor, the chair makeover, the daybed, etc.
I used many thrifted and repurposed items in this room makeover. The accordion peg rack, the wooden little wagon, the wooden wine boxes I used on the wall are all thrifty finds. An old, damaged tripod was turned into a side table.
Wooden stars also add to the Americana décor going on in this room.
This little corner of our guest room is our office, an old window serves as a memo board. I love all the light that always comes into this room, specially in the mornings.
The painted floors have withstand the traffic nicely, considering that the paint I used was not strong. I have to say the poly has done a good job, the spot where the office chair sits hasn't suffered any damage yet.

I'm always happy to work in this room, it's a happy room! The red accents are so perfect to decorate it for Christmas or Summer.
Do you have a room with red accents? I totally recommend that you add red to at least one room in your home!

Love it. I think the pillows are my favorite. My family room is Americana and the pillows would look great on my couch.
