A Little Laundry Shelf

Hello Everyone!

I'm still working on my little room, yes, the laundry room. It feels to me like I've been working in there for a whole year, but well, its almost done.

After installing the wood paneling on the wall (you can see it here) and taking the pictures, this wall felt empty! sooo, I didn't waste any time and went thru my pile of trash wood leftovers trying to find some pieces to create a shelf. That wall is the perfect spot for a shelf with hooks, its the first stop getting in the house from the garage. It had to be customized, it couldn't be that deep because that's a passage way.

Working on this little shelf made me remember the first time I worked with wood. I was in 6th grade in a wood working class, the project of course: a small shelf. What I remember the most is using a plane to smooth out the pieces of wood. It was so haaard :( The wood I brought to work with had pieces of concrete attached to it! No wonder the plane didn't work! My teacher had to help me with that. When the shelf was all finished I was so excited to take it home and show it to my family that I forgot the trouble I had with the wood.

This is my newly built shelf:

These are the pieces I used:

Put together:

Since it was for the Laundry Room, I wanted to incorporate a drying rack. My inspiration were these styles from Ballard designs:

I went to my closest store looking for similar racks, but couln't find them in the small size I needed.  While browsing the store this guy got my attention:

A swing arm trouser rack :) that would work! I just have to cut the top part or hook and in order to attach it to the shelf I got these EZ-Cable clips at HD:

I also bought four hooks and went home to finish the project.

Remember to always, always did I say ALWAYS?  PREDRILL!! Don't just go and begin putting the screws. Firts predrill little holes to prevent the wood from cracking and for the screws to get in easily.

As usual I'm happy with my shelf  especially the memories it brought. The total cost was around $20.
