Discover Maryland's Best-Kept Holiday Secret: Christmas Trees At Maryland State House

Living in the bustling DC, Maryland, Virginia (DMV) region offers a kaleidoscope of holiday events, from city lights to festive markets. Yet, sometimes we overlook the unique, historic charm just a short drive away. There's an entire state filled with amazing Christmas sights waiting to be discovered!

One of the most spectacular—and often-missed—holiday traditions is found right in the heart of the Old Line State: the Maryland State House in Annapolis.

I wouldn't have known about it if it weren't for my daughter, who stumbled upon this breathtaking display just before her first year interning with the Maryland General Assembly.

Every holiday season, dedicated garden clubs from across the state participate in a cherished tradition: they deck the halls of the historic Annapolis State House by decorating 24 stunning Christmas trees. That's right—a dedicated tree representing each Maryland county and Baltimore City! It's a truly spectacular, free, and festive way to experience Maryland history during the holidays.

Each year, a different garden club is chosen to decorate the tree based on the county or important events/figures from the area.

This is an excellent opportunity to visit Annapolis, which is all decked out for the holidays. Still, it's also a fantastic way to learn about our state and all the counties that comprise it, and it's a great way to draw inspiration for decorating your own Christmas tree if you haven't started yet!
