My Sister's Bedroom Makeover - The Before

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.

Bedroom makeovers are one of my favorite projects to work on, and this small bedroom is ready to get a big transformation with a few DIY projects and a good amount of paint!

If you're one of my regulars, you probably know I'm visiting my family in Bogota, Colombia. I've been spending time with my brothers and sisters, visiting places here in Bogota and also in nearby towns.

This past week we even went to our hometown, Ibague, which is about a four-hour drive from Bogota. It was a long time since my last visit and I had a really good time reminiscent of the good and not so-good-times I had while growing up there.

However, I've also managed to get into a good DIY! The timing for bringing change to my sister Mercedes's bedroom couldn't be any better. Her bedroom was looking pretty shabby after more than twenty years without much change. Separating and most likely divorcing her husband is the other reason why I wanted to give her a brand new bedroom.

The bed and nightstands need to go. She didn't like them from the beginning when the hubs bought them. No regrets about ditching them. :)
The grainy walls and ceiling were something I wanted to get rid of, but she didn't want to go through the big mess. She did that same treatment to another room and even though she likes how it looks now, she resisted going that route again.

The window treatment looks better in real life than what it looks like here in this picture. I'm no fan of the valance because it visually shortens the height of the room and that's why I'm changing it.
A padded chair close by the nightstand also needs to go.

The TV is on the wall opposite the bed and she wants to keep it there. I'm planning on relocating the dresser, it blocks the traffic on that side of the room. The ironing table needs to find a better spot too.

Oh, and I hate those cords/wires showing there. They gotta be hidden somehow.

On the other side of the room, the closet and door are going to stay the same. She still likes their color/finish and they work nicely.
More cords and damaged outlets showing up there. ðŸ˜–
Small bedroom

Let's take a look at the changes that are coming to this small bedroom:
  • Paint - The entire room was in dear need of paint
  • Accent wall - The main wall is going to have another color
  • New bed and bed linens
  • New lighting fixtures
  • New curtains
  • New wall art
  • Create a better TV wall
  • DIY nightstands
  • Create a makeup vanity area
Well, guys, the awesome thing is that my nephew, designer Julian is in control of this project. He's a young man who graduated last year and he's more than happy to bring change to his mom's bedroom. I've been enjoying being his assistant. :)

RIDGID 18-Volt Hammer Drill and Impact Driver |

I was so very glad to bring some of my trusty power tools with me. The Ridgid drill/driver and impact driver combo have been a lifesaver when dealing with these concrete -solid rock- walls! ðŸ˜¡

Of course, my Ryobi drilling and the driving kit have been a huge help too.

The entire room was emptied up and curtain rods, TV, screws, and everything from the walls were removed and holes were patched.

Oh, another tool that I brought with me was this Bosch Laser Distance Measurer. So many great features in such a small tool!
How to calculate the paint necessary to paint a room
Check out all the measuring modes of the BOSCH BLAZE 165 ft. Laser Distance Measurer with Bluetooth and Full Color Display:

  • Length: You can measure a specific measure up to 165 ft.
  • Real-Time: The laser measure can be moved closer or further away from the target and the measurement will change in real-time.
  • Indirect: It measures distances that can't be measured directly because of something obstructing the laser from getting a measurement in real-time or length mode.
  • Area: It measures the square footage of a room.
  • Wall Area: It calculates the square feet of multiple walls with the same height. It was perfect to calculate how much paint we needed for this room.
  • Volume: It's the function needed to measure liquids like paint or stain.
  • Stake Out Function: It allows repeatable measurements at a predefined length. It comes in handy when making repeat cuts of material in equal pieces or when installing studs.
  • Level: It's the inclination measurement. One of the features I like the most. You can take vertical or horizontal readings.
The best feature about the Bosch Laser Distance with Bluetooth and Full Color Display is that it works with the MeasureOn app. This app allows you to take notes from your tablet or smartphone directly on photos of the space. You can also manage projects within the app.

The ceiling and three walls were painted white.

And the accent wall got two coats of "gris plomo" paint.

Once painted, I even liked all the texture on that dark wall.

I thought it was going to be more on the gray side, but it definitely looks more blueish.

As usual, light affects the color. Looking toward the door you can see the real color.
