White built-it entertainment center and storage space in family room

Hi guys,

It took me a bit more time finishing this gigantic project than I originally thought. But, guess what?! The built-in is DONE and I'm delighted with its outcome!

At the end of this post you can find all the links to all the previous work, right now I just want to jump into this final part. >>  The doors!

This is the way the built-in looked at the end of my last post ... A whole bunch of cabinets waiting for doors...

However, I have to take you back to when I was building the base cabinets, it was at this precise moment when I thought I wasn't going to finish this project before the Holidays if I also had to build the doors.
Well, I also remembered how it took me a complete year to build the doors for the cabinets in the dining room. Yep. Building doors is not my specialty. ๐Ÿคจ

And that's when I reached out to my friends at Fast Cabinet Doors. They are the pros building doors and fast!
I gave them the dimensions of all the doors I needed and within two weeks of placing my order, this guy brought this huge package to my front door.
A huge packet of cabinet doors being delivered

My doors arrived unscathed. They were packed very well, with lots of extra pieces of cardboard. And hey, the cardboard was reused during the painting process. ;)

I ordered my doors with bore holes and hinges, so yes, I received this big package of hinges to install.
1/2 inch overlay hinges

As soon as I unpacked the doors I brought them to the family room to see how they fit/looked on the cabinets. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

Since I knew I was going to paint them, I ordered the paint grade hardwood with MDF panel- Shaker style doors.

They were super smooth and ready for paint.

However, I went ahead and installed them and luckily I found out I had ordered the wrong hinges. I got the 1/2" inch overlay hinges, but I needed the 3/4" overlay.  I built the cabinets without face frame and I was going for the inset cabinet door look.
That rookie mistake with the hinges was one of the reasons I couldn't finish the entire project before the holidays.

While the new hinges arrived, I painted the doors. I started this job inside the room, with a paint brush and a roller, painting the inside of the doors and smoothing out the roller texture with a paint brush.

But oh my goodness, this was so time consuming! So much so that I decided to bring all the doors outside to the garage and spray paint them with my Wagner paint sprayer. Such a huge relief!

14 doors, 9 shelves on both sides, they were all painted twice. In between coats I used a 220 grid sanding sponge to smooth out the surfaces.

The new hinges arrived, the doors were hung and this project was checked off my to do list!

And to tell you the truth, I can't believe this space is now mine!!

It's a world of difference to what was my norm! ๐Ÿ˜

Remember how messy those cabinets looked during the holidays when the kids were here??  The doors finally turned that messy room into this tranquil and collected space!

Though, I had to start organizing all my pretties! Well, this left tower is now holding kitchen ware. All these items were sentenced to the basement, which was a pain having to go down there every time I needed them.

Ha, not anymore! And I love that the doors keep all the mess hidden!
Adding those long doors to both end shelves was one of the best decisions ever! They hold tons of stuff.
Lots of storage behind doors

On the other end cabinet I'm storing decorative items, but I'm showing you all those changes in an upcoming post.

I can't stop admiring those doors and well, the entire built!

And here are my very best tips if you're thinking on changing those old cabinet doors you have in the kitchen or don't want to build the doors for your latest DIY project:
  1. Measure twice, order once! Good measuring is perhaps, the most important thing when ordering your doors. I followed all the instructions Fast Cabinet Doors have on their website in order to get a perfect fit. If you are replacing the doors, it's even easier, just measure those doors.
  2. Decide what type of door you want. Fast Cabinet Doors has an extensive collection of custom-made cabinet doors in a variety of high-quality wood species and styles including inset, solid and raised panel doors. All doors are sold as unfinished wood, pre-sanded and ready to be painted or stained upon arrival.
  3. Bores or no bores?  Fast Cabinet Doors gives you the option of doors with or without bore holes to set the hinges for a small fee.
  4. Determine what type of hinge is the one you need for your doors. This is something many do-it-yourself'ers don't pay much attention to (me included), but it's so important due to the many different type of doors. Here's a great guide for choosing the right hinge for your project.

Well, there you have it! This part of my family room is now complete. I need to go and put the other side of the room together, but first I need to bring Louie, my little helper to the hair salon. ;)

  6. It's hard to believe that you started with a pile of wood and ended up with this AMAZING piece. My skills extend to putting a small box together for table decor (and I call my style rustic so I don't have to be sure that all sides are square!). I just loved following through your entire process, and cannot say enough about how beautiful the end result is!

    1. Oh, I remember being there too... building that small rustic box :) There's always a starting point. Don't stop there, add a handle, maybe legs... Learning and upgrading your game! Though, I have to tell you, I couldn't have done this, without the tools. ;) Thank you so much for following and for your kind words! ๐Ÿ’•

  8. You have proven that there is NO home improvement project you cannot accomplish in a masterful and beautiful way! WOW!! The wall unit is so professional-looking, well, you ARE a professional at all this home improvement stuff! I hope you have time now to sit and enjoy it. I think I would sit and stare at it at least an hour every day if I have built something like that. It's cool that your repurposed the knobs as well. Plus, Louie is adorable!!

  9. I was wondering how this project was coming. My husband (originally a shops teacher with his major in woods) was throughly impressed with your construction...and now we get to see the result. I think I would have sent out the doors, too. They can be such a pain, with warpage and just having to produce so many at home. Wonderful series of posts and results.
