Valentine's Day Favor Bags

brown paper lunch bags decorated for Valentines day

While I usually love diving into a heavy-duty home improvement project, sometimes it’s nice to clear the workbench and make room for some simple, creative fun. Recently, I took a break from the power tools to spend some quality time crafting—though I have to admit, the “kids” involved look a little different these days!

While my son has officially outgrown the glue-stick phase, my daughter has always been the resident artist of the family. From clay to wax, she’s experimented with it all. Even now that she’s in college and balancing a busy new internship, her creative spark hasn’t dimmed.

In fact, these DIY Valentine’s Day Favor Bags were entirely her idea! She wanted a simple, aesthetic way to bring some holiday cheer to her office, and this easy project was the perfect solution.

Inspiration & Materials

We found the inspiration for these on Michaels’ Instagram feed back during the holidays and realized the technique would be perfect for Valentine’s Day. We headed to Michaels to grab a few staples, and we were ready to go.

To make these bags, you will need:

How to Create the Splatter-Paint Effect

This project is wonderfully low-stress and high-impact. Here is how we put them together:

1. The Paint Splatter

We gave the brown paper bags a custom “splatter” treatment. To do this, we used an old toothbrush and very well-diluted acrylic paint in shades of red, pink, and white separately. Simply dip the bristles and flick them over the bags for a modern, textured look.

2. Prepping the Hearts

While the bags dried, we painted the wooden heart shapes a crisp, solid white to make them pop against the brown paper and colorful splatter.

3. Assembly & Finishing Touches

Once everything was dry, we filled the bags with assorted goodies and candies. To close them:

  • Fold over the top of the bag.

  • Punch two small holes through the folded top.

  • Thread your decorative ribbon through the holes.

  • Slide the wooden heart onto the ribbon before tying it into a bow.

I absolutely love how these turned out! They have that perfect “handmade with love” feel without being overly complicated.

Whether you’re making these for a classroom of school-age kids or for “kids-at-heart” in a professional office setting, these favor bags are a guaranteed way to spread some love this February 14th.

Happy Valentine’s Day crafting!
