DIY Snowflake Christmas Ornament: Repurposed & Hand-Burnished
Once again, I am thrilled to be joining a talented group of bloggers for The 31 Days of Handmade Christmas Ornaments! We are dedicating a full month to holiday crafting, all in hopes of sparking fresh ideas for your own Christmas decor.
Whether you're a seasoned crafter or looking for a simple weekend project, there is something for everyone in this series. At the end of this post, you'll find links to the 11 ornaments already featured this month, as well as a schedule for the remaining DIYs coming your way!
A huge thank you to Diane from An Extraordinary Day, Cupcakes and Crinoline, Yesterday on Tuesday, and Silly Pearl for all their hard work in organizing this festive event.
From Flea Market Find to Festive Decor
If you follow my blog, you know I love a good upcycled project.
My ornament this year started at the local flea market two years ago, where I scored a bundle of wooden poles for free. They sat in storage until this past spring when a massive garage cleaning session provided a "lightbulb moment." As I moved the fluted poles, I realized that if I sliced them thin, they would make the perfect base for rustic snowflake ornaments.
Cutting and Drilling My "Flakes"
While you could technically use a hand saw for this, that sounded like a bit too much "intensity" for me! Instead, I pulled out my Rockwell BladeRunner saw. It worked like a charm, easily slicing through the poles to create thin wooden discs.
I ended up with a mountain of them—over 100 snowflakes!
To turn them into ornaments, they each needed a small hole for a hanging ribbon. I may have gotten a little carried away with my drill, though; I started experimenting and ended up drilling five, six, or even eight holes into the "flutest" parts of the wood to give them more character.
Adding Detail with Wood Burning
To give these flakes their unique look, I broke out my wood-burning tool.
Pro Tip: Start by sketching your design lightly with a pencil.
The Learning Curve: By the tenth ornament, I felt like a total pro!
This is the perfect "slow craft" to do while catching up on your favorite shows.
Personalization and Gift Ideas
I am absolutely in love with how these turned out. Because they were essentially free to make, they are a budget-friendly way to add a handmade touch to the holidays.
Here is how I plan to use mine:
Gift Sets: Bundling 6 or 12 ornaments together as gifts for friends and family.
Tree Decor: Filling the gaps in my own Christmas tree with rustic, natural textures.
Gift Tags: Using a wood-burning tool or marker to add names to the back for personalized gift wrapping.

Cute idea!
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize at first that they were so small, you could hang those anywhere (furniture knobs, lamp switches, etc.)
That's so right, Julie! So many uses for them. Thanks for stopping by my friend.
DeleteCristina,
ReplyDeleteI am in love with these snowflakes. Handmade ornaments are the best. Thank you for sharing this great idea.
Thanks Vanessa! Can't wait to see yours. ;)
DeleteI always love your Christmas ornaments...I am so fortunate that my Mom started a tradition of giving my kids collectable ornaments every year...thye easily fill a 10' tree! But SOMEDAY I will have to turn them over to their rightful owners and I may have to start making some to fill the tree. Either that, or I will put up a little table top tree, put a bow on the top, and go to Colorado for the holiday...lol! Now there is a plan!
ReplyDeleteHey Beck, I think that's what Christmas is all about. All those memories and traditions we create, passing them generation after generation. That last idea is gonna be my favorite tradition a couple years down the road. :D Thanks for stopping by and for your kind words!
