Rustic Christmas Mantel

The mantel is usually the first place I decorate for the new season.

Well, this year, it wasn't.

The first holiday decorations were added to this space right HERE

Nonetheless, the mantel got a very deserving second place. ;)

Contrary to last year's decor when I used lots of red, this year I'm going for a calmer palette, using lots of natural elements.

bleached pine-cone garland, wooden moose, skis, little trees

The first thing added to the mantel was the wooden pallet. However, that's not one of those regular pallets.
If you have followed me for a while, you might remember I DIY'ed the floor in my son's room using plywood. Well, all the left over pieces were brought here to the mantel.  Some of those boards sport a stained brown color on the back.

wooden palette, vintage books, vintage ornament skis, brush trees

As the center piece, I used this beautiful cotton wreath. I love it! I think this wreath is the perfect blend of rustic and sophistication.

My son calls it "the donut". I know, how mean! :)

books, vintage ornament skis, wooden moose and tree decor

Some books, a wooden moose and the only pair of skis I could find (no wonder, they're everywhere in blogland!), flank one side of the mantel.

brush trees, cooper trees, pine-cone trees, wooden spools

On the opposite side, a little forest was created.
Copper, brush, glass and wooden trees,
were scattered among wooden spools and pine-cones.

How to bleach pine cones

Oh yeah, the pine cones were bleached...

And used as little trees on the mantel and on the garland.
Some others were hung on the Christmas tree as ornaments.

I'm a "garland" person, not happy with one, I'm using five.

One of pine-cones, another of acorns, and three more of pom-poms.

It all feels so warm and cozy here in my family room. It's like having a little winter wonderland inside my house.

  1. Cristina- Your mantle is beautiful with ALL FIVE garlands bedecking it. I LOVE those little "acorns" with the caps made out of pine cone pieces. So cute. The overall effect is just lovely- soft and serene looking. I may bleach some of my pine cones this year, too. Love the way they look. xo Diana
