DIY Wooden Leaf Placemats and a Blue and Orange Tablescape

old books, blue lanterns, orange cherries, mountain ash shrub, plaid napkins

Mountain Ash Shrub berries on Fall tablescape
The gorgeous colors of Fall paired up with a deep blue make for a striking combination on this Fall table. DIY leaf placemats are the perfect base for this gorgeous tablescape. Let me show you how you can make your very own set!

I hope you've had a nice weekend. As I told you on Friday's post I was going to be busy with some paint / stained projects and that's exactly what I did. Some of those projects are going to my son's bedroom, they're not quite ready. I was painting the ceiling, walls and doing some cleaning, kinda boring but totally necessary.

Well, all those projects weren't fit for a post yet, so, I tried to put together something much prettier.
Remember the white leaf placemats a showed you during my Fall Home Tour?

I really like them, it's like having two sets of placemats. Yeah, that's right. Two sets in one.
One that's white and the other plain wood!

I made these placemats last year- Fall went by so fast I didn't have time to take proper pictures before I had to store them.

This year I'm really enjoying them, these are the materials and tools you'll need to create this super easy project:
  • Felt placemat
  • ¼" Plywood board
  • Jig saw (I used my BladeRunner)
  • Sander
  • Stain / paint ( I used Thompson's Waterseal stain - Traditional Brown)
  • Matte finish spray Polyurethane

Trace the leaf pattern from the felt placemat onto the plywood and cut it out with a jig saw. I used my Rockwell BladeRunner, which makes the job of cutting out shapes super easy. Since The boards are only ¼" thick, I bundle them by two, it goes even faster.

Sand those edges and paint or stain as you like.
I gave them another light sanding after the paint/stain dried for a more rustic look.
The final step is to give them two coats of matte finish polyurethane to protect them.

This time I had lots of fun setting the table with some vibrant colors.

Blue and orange is such a striking combination!

Some orange berries from a neighborhood shrub were the perfect embellishment to the blue lantern centerpiece.

Unlike felt placemats, these wooden ones are sturdy and so easy to clean up.

Fall - Thanksgiving table with blue and orange colors

I know they're going to be a staple on my Fall tables for a long time.

Hmm I'm thinking on using this same setting for Thanksgiving. If only I could find the orange berries by the end of November. :/

We'll see, we'll see.

I found the Blue lanterns at Kohl's they were 90% off , only $1.69 each :)

  3. Cristina seriously one of the most beautiful Fall table settings I've seen in a long time! I think you must love your BladeRunner just as much as me, I use it at least once a week and actually prefer it to my jigsaw. The wood leaves are so, so smart.

    1. Thanks Brittany! I couldn't believe that price. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, since they're summer clearance items, there must be only small quantities available.

  7. I've never tried wood working. Is it hard? I have a birthday coming up. Should I ask for a blade runner? Easy enough to use? I'd love to make these! So fall-y!

    1. Hi Sheila,
As with anything new, there's always a learning curve. It's just a matter of start with small projects and the right tools. As I said in the post, working with the Rockwell BladeRunner, is so easy and there's is no fear of getting caught with the blade since it's well protected. You guide the wood with both hands, no need of clamps. This is a tool I always keep on using for this kind of small projects or for simple straight cuts. It also comes with blades for metal, tile and aluminum or plastic. This would be a great birthday present. ;)
      Thanks for stopping by!
