15 Repurposed Wire Spool Ideas

wire spools transformed as tables, clock and crib

It's always a nice surprise when one of you, my readers, e-mails me about wanting to get some more explanation on a project, a question, just to say hi, or like in this case to give me ideas!

Ha, you're all so awesome!

This post it's "brought to you" by Jennifer from Ohio. ;)

When Jennifer read my post about the wire spools I've found, she was quick to send me a compilation of great ideas. All I can say is Thanks, Jennifer!

These are some of her suggestions plus some others ideas I found online. I love them all.

This is an RH table inspired by a cable spool, the perfect table for any little artist.

A regular cable spool can be sanded and painted white to copy-cat this look.

Though, a regular wire spool can be used as is and it would also look great!

I might say, the easiest way to re-purpose a wire spool is as a table, you just have to style it the way you want to and that's it.

Here, once again as an outdoor table.

Smaller cable spools also make great tables, in this case, a library table.
Step 1: To build this brilliant "bookmobile" - crafted by Halligan Norris Smith and featured in Grace Bonney's Design*Sponge at Home ($21.24; barnesandnoble.com) - search a commercial salvage yard or sites like eBay for a wooden cable spool (usually under $50). You'll also need about 12 three-quarter-inch-thick wooden dowels that measure at least as tall as the spool when it's lying flat on either wheel.Step 2: Lay the spool on one of its wheels, then use a ruler to measure the distance from the top of the top wheel to the top of the bottom wheel. Use a handsaw to cut the dowels to this size, then sand the spool and dowels.Step 3: Measure the distance from one wheel's outer edge to the spool's core. Divide that number in half.Step 4: Beginning at the outer edge of the top of the top wheel, measure in the distance computed in Step Three. Mark with a pencil. Repeat around the spool's circumference, spacing marks an equal distance apart.Step 5: At each mark, drill all the way through the top wheel, using a three-quarter-inch spade bit. Then, with a hammer, drive a dowel into each hole, until the dowel's bottom is secured against the bottom wheel. Paint spool and dowels, if desired; let dry.Step 6: Evenly space three casters ($12 for five; ikea.com) in a triangle pattern atop the top wheel, placing each caster about an inch in from the edge, and drill into place. Flip the spool over and you're ready to roll.

Almost the same concept, as a shelf.

But using them as stools is another popular option for these reels.

Not as popular, but definitely cute, you can create a rocking cot for a baby. I think this would work nicely as a prop for taking pictures of babies.

Wire spools can be also re-purposed into nice furniture, how neat are these chairs?! I wonder how one can stop them from rolling all around. :/

  1. What a fantastic collection. I am leaning towards just leaving mine as tables. They are easy to roll out of the way to mow, but I guess I could get off my butt and paint them. Looking forward to seeing what you create! I know whatever you do, it will be awesome!

  10. Hi Deb Foglia, You can find the first table at Restoration Hardware -link above- though not a cheap price. Otherwise you can score them free thru Craiglist, electric companies, sometimes asking at Home Depot for the smaller ones.
