A Recycled Pumpkin

ribbon spools are put together to form a pumpkin.

decorate for fall with pumpkins - from recycled products

For many years I've been collecting this.
Yeah,  ribbon spools.

It was hard for me to just throw them away.
I kept on saving them not knowing how I could recycle them.
The only thing I could think of was for wheels for a toy car but that was about it.
Then last year I noticed those pumpkins made out of jar lids, like the one HERE that I really love, the only problem is I don't have that many jar lids :/
So, you got it!
My collection of empty ribbon spools came in handy to create that same look. This is how:

Detach the sides of the spools from the ring.

Spray paint the rings.  For obvious reasons I used orange ;)

Before the paint dries, give them a shower of glitter.

Once dry take a piece of string (I used a light wire), and lace it through all the rings.

For the stem, any piece of paper would do, roll it and cut it to size.

Use jute rope to go around the paper, holding it in place with a dot of hot glue.  Paint it and add glitter.

Place it in the center of the pumpkin and you're done.

You'll get a very sparkly pumpkin, though the decorative possibilities are endless.

Have you recycled these kind of spools? What have you created with them?

  47. Cristina, I'm so excited to be featuring this gorgeous pumpkin at our Get Your DIY on party tonight! I cannot believe it's made out of spools. I did try to make a drum ornament out of a couple of fat ribbon spools last year, but that project ended up in the trash ha ha! Hope to see you again tonight for Burlap project week! XO
