blue coastal votives with jute rope and sand and sea shells on tray

Hi Friends,

In about two weeks I'm going with my son on a long trip/vacation to my home country, Colombia, to visit my family. It's been over five years since I last went. Needles to say, I'm super happy and busy packing and leaving everything in order here at home, the hubs and daughter are staying. ;)

I've been working on some projects that I haven't had the time to upload pics or write about them yet, they're gonna be the ones to go live during my trip, but I'm also going to share with you some of the experiences during the month long stay.

I was trying to come up with a little gift idea for some helpers I'm gonna have here at home during my absence and finally, last Saturday I got busy creating this little project to cross that task off my to do list.

I saw this idea somewhere, I really don't remember where, but when these cute little jars (Costco caramel custard desserts) got emptied, I knew they were going to be used as votives,

With Summer upon us, I decided to give them a coastal feel. It was my first time using Krylon Sea Glass spray paint and I LOVE it!
I put all the little glasses upside down and began spray painting them, but they were too close to each other.

The size of each little glass is about 2½" x 2½"
So, I had to change the technique and instead went one by one, holding them with a stirring stick as you see in the above pic.

I like that you can give them a light or deep color depending on how much spray paint you use. It's such a beautiful color!

I was delighted with the glass votives, but in order to create a gift set I decided to build little trays out of scrap pieces of wood and square dowels.

Materials for one tray:
              2 pieces - 9½" long
              2 pieces - 2¾" long
              4- ½" for the legs.
Ryobi Brad nailer
RYOBI 18-Volt ONE+ AirStrike 18-Gauge Cordless Brad Nailer
The dowel pieces were glued all along the perimeter of the wooden board to create the little tray. Since I didn't want to wait for the glue to dry,  I use my brad nailer to speed up the work.

After sanding the rough edges, they were painted with chalk paint and then, they were distressed with 60 grid sandpaper.
DIY - candles set

The final details were to wrap jute rope to the top of each jar, add a bit of sand, and place a votive candle and some shells on it.

Well, this surely is a trash to treasure transformation. I love how these gift sets turned out!
