One of my favorite things about decorating for Valentine's Day is the instant mood boost. After weeks of cold, gray winter days, a big splash of vibrant color makes the season feel so much more bearable.

Yesterday, we were blessed with a surprisingly beautiful, sunny day—the perfect inspiration to get busy with some bright colors and fresh decor. I decided to tackle a project I've been dreaming of:

A DIY Ombre Tissue Paper Heart. It's high-impact, low-cost, and the perfect focal point for a Valentine's Day mantel.

Supplies You'll Need

This is a very budget-friendly project! Most of these items might already be in your craft stash:

  • Cardboard: Used as the sturdy backing for the heart.

  • Tissue Paper: I used one small package of ombre paper from Michaels and a darker shade I already had on hand. (I used about 13 sheets total.)

  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks

  • Double-Sided Tape

  • A Pallet Board or Backdrop (to mount the heart).

Step-by-Step: Creating the Ombre Heart

The process is simple, rhythmic, and honestly quite therapeutic!

1. Prep the Squares: Cut your tissue paper into 3.5-inch squares.

2. Form the Flowers: To create the "flower" look, simply pinch the center of each square and pull the edges upward.

3. Glue and Layer: Place a small dot of hot glue on the pinched back of the flower and press it onto your cardboard heart. The gluing goes fast!

Pro-Tip: The most time-consuming part is actually separating the thin sheets of tissue paper. I recommend doing a bunch at once before you start gluing!

4. Create the Ombre Effect: Start with your darkest colors at the top or bottom and gradually transition to the lighter ombre shades as you move toward the the other end.

Styling the Mantel

Once the heart was fully "bloomed," I used double-sided tape to attach it to my go-to DIY-Pallet Board

Then came the fun part: shopping my home! I scouted around for extra accents to tie the look together. Candlesticks topped off with paper cones, arrows, and more hearts decorate the entire ensemble.

My favorite find is this new Valentine's Day pillow cover, talk about a theme!

Love is ... pillow cover

As a last-minute addition, I decided to dress up my milk glass water goblets. I topped each one with a white wiffle-style ball (a plastic ball with holes).

They turned out to be the perfect "frogs" to hold extra tissue paper flowers! It's a whimsical, inexpensive touch that really completes the display.

Finally, the paper garlands made with my Christmas present ---> my Silhouette Cameo. I'm loving it! Practice's finally paying off. ;)

Happy Valentine's Day!!

    1. Hahha I like that industrious term. Thanks Brenda! I don't have much Valentine decor, I usually use red stuff I've used during Christmas. This time it was different because of the pink paper I already had.
