I have wanted built-in book shelves for
ever (actually, I'd love a little library room) - but till I get a place of my own I will have to just look at other peoples and dream a whole lot!
Enjoy figuring it out and planning the process.
Sheree
www.seaweedandraine.comSeaweed and Rainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11741557465820695748noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7618114936688162288.post-62992428349149871522013-02-22T15:37:38.548-05:002013-02-22T15:37:38.548-05:00Make your man feel even MORE speshul when you tell...Make your man feel even MORE speshul when you tell him that the "proper name" for that heater is a BARN HEATER--more specificaly a MILK ROOM HEATER. Out here in farm country where it sometimes gets to 40 BELOW ZERO we use them for all parts of the house (and barn and sheds and---) but that is the technical function--they are rugged and will last for years under harsh conditions. Maybe you shouldn't share that last part!

You can always have the LOOK of built in shelves--and who DOESN'T want built ins? And who can AFFORD built ins??? LOL! By using the tall "wood" book cases and edging them out in molding. I have done this with lightweight pre-pressed molding---looks good. On the top use a "heavier" detail molding and on the sides use either a narrow shape or a wider one if you have two cases butted up against one another--you can fasten then together and to the wall for safety and sturdyness and to hide the gap. Paint the back of the shelves or paper them if you like----

For the center area you can add the same style or different cabinets. We are going to be doing this in our LR now that a large piece of family furniture is moving on to a grown kids house--YAY!!!---and we are going to "retire" the "Entertainment Center" now that we don't NEED an entire huge piece of furniture to house a TV we can hang on the wall. For the record this is the FIRST and ONLY time my HUSBAND has mentioned going to IKEA. Ever. And we live 5 HOURS away from IKEA. We are going to "flank" the TV with tall cabs and use either smaller versions below or a "cube" system for storage and display.

When I LOOKED at the amount of SPACE the "Entertainment Center" takes UP and the amount of stuff that is ACTUALLY on there--that "reads" as complete chaos and clutter but is NOT---I was stunned to see that there is relatively little up there but the whole thing is so massive--right now there is a 46" TV in there! And a tower of DVD's on the side of THAT!!!!---that it makes the whole end of the room look cramped. Time to move on!!!

I am thinking of two ideas for the bottoms--either tension rods and curtains or there are swing out curtain rods--for windows that swing in or out--and you can add a PANEL of fabric or a lightweight "solid" material to this for the LOOK of doors. OR you could just add finished panels and hinges! Using a plain panel that you then cut some molding or use a pre-made rondel or other detail for the doors would save tons and allow you to match or complement your room. Endless!!!!Deadhead9https://www.blogger.com/profile/10769390350949316808noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7618114936688162288.post-40074921212118684002013-02-21T05:45:08.677-05:002013-02-21T05:45:08.677-05:00Cristina, you work is great. My neighbor and I both have a duraflame insert for our fireplaces and LOVE them. Probably not the most design forward thing, but it really warms up the main living areas in our old drafty homes and actually doesn't look too bad. As one of your other readers suggested, maybe you could buy just the heater box and you could build the mantel and book shelves around it. It will be exciting to see what you come up with. Also, check into infrared heater boxes. We got one for our basement and it really adds a nice warm heat for the room. Sandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00234421029665169718noreply@blogger.com
