I Got The Door Knobs!

gold and black vintage cabinet door knobs painted black

Hey there,
The built-in unit for my family room is done, but at the very last minute, I was running around to find some pretty doorknobs!

Well, I got them, and as I promised in my last post, here's the story of how I got my hands on these beautiful knobs.

Yep. I almost settled for these ones you see in the picture below from Target, I liked them a lot, but they were out of stock when I was interested in them. Ha, after all, I'm glad that happened.

I continued searching online for those perfect knobs. Yep. And after wasting a couple of hours in front of the computer I realized I had a good amount of cabinet door knobs somewhere in the basement!

Ha, this old mind had forgotten all about them! I got these beautiful knobs a long time ago at a Restore for less to nothing. I used a good amount of them in my son's room, in the closet, and the built-ins where I used them in its rustic stage.

However, for my new project I wanted to go a different route.  I loved their mushroom design and brass base, but the wooden, rustic look had to go.

Let me show you how I gave these tired door knobs a new polished look.

1. SEPARATING THE WOOD FROM THE METAL

The first task was to separate the wood from the metal base by using a heat gun to melt the glue that held both pieces together.

Each knob was held with a vice grip while the heat from the heat gun was directed to its back.

Then, both pieces were separated using a very small and thin spatula.

The glue left on the metal base was also removed.

2. CLEANING THE METAL BASE

This was the dirtiest knob of the whole bunch, it took a good amount of elbow grease and Bar Keepers Friend to brush away all that dirt.

The end result was quite evident. Love them!

3. PAINTING THE WOODEN TOP

Dried glue was also removed from the wooden pieces and a light sanding with 120 grid sandpaper was done to removed the clear shiny coating before painting them.

After dusting them, they were ready for paint.

Double-sided tape was temporarily added on the bottom of each wooden piece for two reasons, first, I didn't want the pieces flying in the air while spray painting them.

Secondly, I had to elevate them for paint not to puddle underneath each one of them.

It all worked like a charm. :)

The one thing left was to attach both surfaces again and my Ryobi hot glue gun was the tool for this job.

The end result: GORGEOUSNESS!

They're not perfect, they look more polished, but they still have some marks that, in my opinion, give them more character.

I so love their new look!

I went ahead and started installing them on my pretty doors using this super cool tool you all need to have. The Dremel GO, a lithium-ion cordless screwdriver, that's so convenient and easy to use!
It's the perfect tool to keep in one of your kitchen drawers to have it handy when you need to drive screws, you simply push and it goes!

    1. It was, Marty! But, once I remembered I had these knobs, I couldn't wrap my head around the idea of getting 14 new ones, perhaps of lesser quality. These door knobs are strong, the cleaning was well worth it.

  6. They are beautiful. Best of all, you have reminded me to not be in a hurry to throw things out that I uncover in the garage as I pack it up to move.
