Basement Decorated for Christmas

First of all, this is not my home's basement, no. I do have a basement in my house but is unfinished, it's the place to store stuff and where my husband has his little "studio". But this post is not about my home, it's about my Sister-in-law's home.

The two pictures below show how her basement looked this past Halloween. She was tired of the same decor the room had sported for more than 12 years.

Getting rid of the old sofa was the first step on this makeover, it was already gone when these pictures were taken. The leather chairs had to stay, they're comfy and still in good condition.

It was also time for her to say bye bye to the window treatments and bring new furniture pieces to go for a more modern look.

Like two months ago we went looking for a sectional, and this beautiful baby arrived just before Thanksgiving. She updated the ottoman with a cute slip that makes it look like it came with the sectional.

This past weekend we spend an afternoon, decorating the room for Christmas.

She wanted a pale green, red and silver palette so, the old bubble wreath with its new color worked perfectly well above the fireplace.

The TV was moved away from this corner and it was replaced by this beautiful buffet that she painted with ASCP.

A small Christmas friend and some branches is all this corner needed.

On the opposite side the Christmas tree creates balance.

Last week I was busy sewing these stockings, an early Christmas present, I love the white Dwel Cameo Ovals Bleache fabric, it works nicely with the bubble wreath.

Silver tags and green ribbons were added to complement the theme.

Placing the TV in between the two windows works much better for the overall function of the room.

The deep windows hold some friendly characters. :)

She's still debating the idea of hanging curtains at both ends (by the piano and Christmas tree), what do you think? I say yes, only stationary panels, but she is not sure.

The picture gallery was removed from above the piano, in its place we hung snowflake ornaments, they look better in real life, they're hard to notice in this pictures.

A top the piano the choir practices their Christmas recital. :)

The legs were removed from the Ikea console to accommodate it above the long heater. Just mounted on the wall gives a sleeker look.

Log reindeer and...

Some ornaments complete this area.

I also brought this chalkboard my son helped me paint.

Remember when he was sick? He did most of the chalkboard painting. I did the Feliz Navidad designs. By the way, I had to bring him to the doctor on Tuesday, he had beginnings of bronchitis. :( Right now he's on medicine and feeling much better.

The leather chairs went to the other side of the room and we brought two more chairs to create another sitting area, because she is having many Christmas guests.

We were so busy, time flew, and before we knew the day was gone! The pictures were all taken with bright harsh lights, sorry about it! This last picture before I said goodbye, trying to make Sophie, my trusty companion, to stay still. She was by my side all. the. time.

This is how the room looks so far, but there are more changes coming for the new year, beginning with the fireplace. I'll keep you posted.

Until then, hugs,

  4. Beautiful....this is the time of the year I wish I had a basement area for family! Outstanding changes and I need to know where you got that sectional!!!!
As I read through the post, my only thought was "PAINT THE FIREPLACE!" Sounds like you have a few plans for it...I would suggest paint and beefing up the mantel a tad with some crown! Or maybe leave the mantel as is and add some kind of trim treatment above it to draw the eye "up" since the ceilings are a tad low...not sure what would look best!
Maybe paint the Ikea shelf (love!)...or do a gel stain treatment, and replace the hardware with something like the ones I used in my bathroom...I also used them on my office desk

I would create a "frame" identical to the two windows, in the middle of them, then hang the tv in that and then flank the outside of the real windows with curtains...maybe just mock curtains ...just to create the illusion of one long bank of windows along that wall.
What a great room to work with!
But my bet is "you got this" :)
