Give Interest to a Room with a Wooden Cornice

The work in my daughter's bedroom continues.  As I told you before, the crown molding was already installed following the simple tricks I share in my last post right HERE.

This time, I went a bit out of my comfort zone trying to install a wooden cornice on the entire wall above the windows, the crown molding at the top and running the crown all around the room.

These two pictures that were put together show you how the room looked before.  My daughter didn't want to have a pink room anymore, so the pink curtains with its valances had to go.

The wooden cornice was going to replace those valances.

Assembling the cornice itself was pretty easy,  Crown and panel mouldings were attached to a long 12' 1x12 board, as this side view shows:

Well, the board and the panel moulding were put together off site.  The crown had to be installed after the board was in its place.

The main problem was how to install that long board?!  ðŸ¤”

The only solution I could find was to install  "H supports"? (I don't even know how to call them, they look like an H ), on the wall, where the board could be nailed to.  Like this:

As usual, making sure they were attached to the studs on the wall. A closer look:

At the end of the day this is how it looked.

After caulking, painting and some extras, this is the new architectural element in the room.

  1. It looks awesome! I've always thought cornice boards made a room look classy and a bit upscale, if you will, and yours are no different. Thank you for sharing the 'H' because I always woundered exactly how it's done lol. You did a great job now come to my house;)

  2. Thanks Regina! The "H support" was the only way I could figure out and so far is working pretty well. I guess there most be other ways for profesionals to do this. I would love to know about!

  4. Christina,
This is like "professional"! This is the way all drapes should be hung! As a designer I truly appreciate when I walk into a hotel (the Fairmont SF) or a home that has done this. Way to Go!

  9. Thanks Everyone!
Lee, I used the same hardware I had before. You can see it in some of the close up pics of the H. There is a rod that you can take off or on to install the curtains. That said, my recommendation is to install the curtains hardware before attaching the cornice.
