Behind the Door Shelf

After taking a brake from painting the design on that wall, I'm now ready to continue working on updating the kids bathroom.

This time I decided I wanted to create a very shallow shelf  to put right behind the door.  It would serve two purposes, decorative and storage item.

I had that mirror, the one at the right, to kind of fill that empty space, I didn't like it! The other one on the left is the medicine cabinet, it's storage space, than means it stays.

So,  my design included a place for the magazines, little compartments for my daughter to display the soaps she likes to use, and for decorative items to be placed on the shelves.

The material I used was 1x4 boards of poplar.  Even though they call them 1x4, the exact measurement for this boards is 3/4" thick x 3.5" wide.  You can also use the 1x3 if your space behind the door is smaller.

I used some scrap pieces I already had! I run out of material pretty soon.  The total cost for the 16' I bought were around $16 because I bought it from a Lumber company, if I go to Home D or Lowes the prices for sure are going to be way higher than that!
The general dimensions for my shelf are: 54"x22"x3.5"  but the good thing when you build something is that you can do it whatever way you want to!

For connecting the inside shelves I used my nail gun.

For the main frame I used the Kreg, to create strong joints.

After putting it together it was time for paint.  I spray painted it orange to give the bathroom a pop of color.

The final part was to place some bars to keep the magazines in place.  There I used a strip of zinc, I bought it at HD for under $3 a 72" strip (they are the ones you used on shelves to hold the shelves in place), and cut it to my dimensions.

To hang the shelf onto the wall I was sure to screw it at least from one stud on the wall, for the other side I used anchors.  I used one of this on each of the four corners:

I like how well the metallic strips holding the magazines go with the wall design.

The orange and blue combo go so well, energizing this kids space.

These cactuses were in my kids bedrooms, I "stole" them, change the containers for this pretty cans from the dollar store that I spray painted.  Btw, that's the only kind of plant that has survived in their rooms!

The WASH letters from Michael's $1.50 each.  My son keeps on re-arranging the letters so it reads MASH, SHAM, HAMS, and he thinks is so funny!

A very easy to construct shelf that gives you storage and when the door closes it becomes art!
